My Prizes

Bucks For Breaks

When I first started listening to WQAM in 1962, they were running a contest called "Bucks For Breaks". The idea was to make up a saying in the form of "All ____ listen to WQAM because ______", where you filled in the blanks. The one I sent in was "All good DJs listen to WQAM because they work there".
Here's the winning check stub:

Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice

Here's a big winner. For some contest I don't remember, I won a quart of Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice. Here's the letter and check stub for 56 cents to cover the cost of the juice plus tax. (Florida does not charge tax on food). Some white space removed for size.

And here's  the 56 cent check stub:

A $5.60 winner!

I think this was from a "prize machine" contest. It would keep announcing different prizes randomly. When you said stop, the next prize it announced was what you won. Mine was 5 dollars and 60 cents.
The check stub:

I also won several records:

  • The Locomotion - Little Eva
  • Return To Sender  - Elvis Presley
  • Shake Me I Rattle - Marion Worth
  • A Fresca promotional record by Trini Lopez
